FORMER LINCOLN SQUIRE IS FIRST BOB HAMER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT
July 6th, 2011
Worthy Grand Knight, Worthy Deputy Grand Knight, Officer’s of council 9202 and fellow Brother Knights and guests,
Back in the year 2009 we lost a great man; Brother Bob Hamer. Bob had been a Squire, a Knight of Columbus and Grand Knight of our council 9202 as well as another council prior to his move to Lincoln with his wife Barbara.
Upon Bob’s passing, Barbara very kindly and most graciously asked mourners to, in lue of sending flowers to Bob’s funeral, donate their flower monies to St. Joseph the Carpenter Squires Circle 5197, our Squires Circle. The Squires and our counselors were very touched by this charitable gesture. We made a promise to Barbara that one day in the future, we would make an attempt to honor Bob’s memory for this act of kindness. Today Brothers, is that day!
We are proud to offer a Bob Hamer Memorial Scholarship for the first time, and most important, not the last time. Our Squires Circle and our Knights Council working together in unison has brought this memorial to fruition. In order to receive this Scholarship, you must first be a Squires of our Circle. Upon turning the ripe old age of 18, you are required to become a Knight of Columbus from Council 9202. You must also be enrolled in college or a legitimate trade school.
Our candidate for the First Bob Hamer Memorial Scholarship has met these requirements!
I am proud to present this check for $700 to Victor Gomez.
Victor is our first Squire turned Knight, a hard working young man, enrolled in college at Sierra College, playing on their Rugby team, and holding down a job. He has his sights set on attaining a degree in Engineering. Victor is also an Outside Guard for our council, and has become a Counselor for the Squires Circle.
Victor has come to epitomize what a Squire to Knight should be through his charity, unity, fraternity and as he goes on to become a 4th degree, Patriotism.
I am very proud and honored to offer him this long awaited Scholarship.
Thank you Victor for a job well done!

On the afternoon of April 30th, I had the honor of being invited to the Investiture of California's newest circle. Due to the efforts of Deputy Grand Knight William Irwin, the circle will be sponsored by the Palm Springs Council, No. 3583, Jack Sauter, Grand Knight. Brother Douglas Herrera will be the new circle's chief counselor.
To add to the importance placed on the ceremonial, Color Corps Commander Florentino Zamora and eight members of the Fr. Fermin Assembly, No. 71, were in attendance. Following the ceremonial, the new Squires and family members were treated to a veritable feast that included homemade pizza, assorted salads, hamburgers, assorted lumpia and spring rolls, fresh fruit, brownies, ice cream, etc., etc., all prepared by the Palm Springs Council Knights and their wives. Needless to say, my heretofore successful diet took a significant hit!
The State Circle welcomes California's ten newest Squires and wishes every success to their chief counselor and sponsoring council.
Fraternally,
Gene Buehl, Director
